Recipe FAQ
You do not need to refrigerate the cherry dump cake. Of the 3 ingredients, none of them are perishable and can be stored at room temperature. This cake is best served hot so if you are going to store it for later then you will want to warm it back up in the oven for 5-10 minutes before serving.
You can make the cake in advance and freeze it for another time. When you are ready to serve it, let the cake thaw for 30 minutes and then make sure to warm it up again.
You do not stir the dump cake. The ingredients are just dumped and baked. I have seen some dump recipes that ask for stirring, but not this one!
This recipe can also be made in a crock pot or slow cooker. You will still dump the ingredients into the slow cooker the same way that you would the baking pan. Set the slow cooker to low for 4 hours.
You can use a 9x13 pan like we did for this recipe. You can also use this reciepe to make the dump cake in two 8x8 pans. That way you can eat one now and have a cherry cake for later
Normally, you test whether a cake is done by inserting a toothpick in the middle and checking to see if anything sticks to it. That method would produce some interesting results here since the consistency of this cake should be more like a cobbler or pie than a cake. Really, you just want to watch the top and make sure that it is a golden brown. By that point, the top will be fully baked and the rest of the cake will be hot and ready to eat!
Oh yes you can! My favorite is cherry but do not be afraid to branch out and try others as well. Some popular substitutions are apple, peach, mixed berry, strawberry.
