Easy to make recipe
Dump cake recipes are called that because you, quite literally, dump all of the ingredients into the baking pan and bake. This recipe is also called a "soda dump cake" because 7up or Sprite is used as the liquid in the cake.
2 steps...that's it! Make an easy dump cake dessert recipe when you want a hot sweet treat without a lot of hassle or mess. This recipe may be even easier to make than our 5 Ingredient No Bake Cheesecake!
Quick to prepare
This dessert is ready to bake in under 5 minutes since the prep involves one dish and no stirring. It comes out moist, fruity, and ready to eat. The taste and consistency is almost like a cherry cobbler.
A step by step guide to making this recipe
These are the only ingredients you need:
Step 1 - Dump the ingredients
Spray the bottom of the dish with nonstick cooking spray. You can also use butter to grease the pan. Dump the cherries into the greased baking dish. Sprinkle the box of yellow cake mix evenly over the top of the cherries.
Step 2 - Pour
Pour the soda over the top of the cake mix and make sure to get it as wet as possible. Make sure that all of the cake mix has been moistened. Don't stir the ingredients!
Let the ingredients do the work for you.
Step 3 - Bake
Bake at 350ºF for 40-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Ready to enjoy!
Recipe FAQ
You do not need to refrigerate this cake because none of the 3 ingredients are perishable and can be stored at room temperature. Cherry Dump Cake is best served hot so if you are going to store it for later then you will want to warm it back up in the oven at 250ºF for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Make the cake in advance and freeze it for another time. When you are ready to serve it thaw for 30 minutes and then warm it up again.
You do not stir the dump cake because the consistency would not be what you are looking for. The cake would be too mushy if it was stirred. For best results, the ingredients are just dumped and baked.
This recipe can also be made in a crock pot or slow cooker. You will still dump the ingredients into the slow cooker the same way that you would the baking pan. Set the slow cooker to low for 4 hours.
You can use a 9x13 pan like we did for this recipe. You can also use this recipe to make the dump cake in two 8x8 pans. That way you can eat one now and have a cherry cake for later
Normally, you test whether a cake is done by inserting a toothpick in the middle and checking to see if anything sticks to it. That method would produce some interesting results here since the consistency of this cake should be more like a cobbler or pie than a cake. Really, you just want to watch the top and make sure that it is a golden brown. By that point, the top will be fully baked and the rest of the cake will be hot and ready to eat!
Oh yes you can! My favorite is cherry but do not be afraid to branch out and try others as well. Some popular substitutions are apple, peach, mixed berry, strawberry.
Serving Suggestions
- Dump cake a la mode. Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream
- Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake. Drizzle on chocolate syrup. I know it seems like overkill but chocolate and cherries just go so well together.
- Nuts on top. Sprinkle on some chopped pecans, walnuts, or cashews.
- Serve with coffee. This dessert is very sweet and needs something to balance it out so coffee is perfect for this.
- Apple Dump Cake. Substitute apples for cherries and you have a whole new dump cake.
