Read on to learn how to make the best 3 ingredient cherry dump cake recipe.
Why is it called a dump cake?
This recipe is called a dump cake because you can make it by quite literally dumping all of the ingredients into the baking pan and baking. 2 steps...that's it! A dump recipe is perfect for those times when you want a hot sweet treat without messing up a bunch of dishes. The kosher 3 ingredient cherry dump cake is ready to bake in under 5 minutes and is so easy to make. It comes out moist, fruity, and ready to eat.
A Step by step guide to making this recipe
This is all you need for 3 ingredient cherry dump cake:
Time needed: 45 minutes.
3 Ingredient Cherry Dump Cake step by step
- Dump the ingredients
Dump the cherries into the greased baking pan. Sprinkle the cake mix on top of the cherries.
Pour the soda over the top of the cake mix and make sure to get it as wet as possible. Pour the Sprite over the top of the cake mix. Make sure that all of the cake mix has been moistened. Don't stir!
Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
You do not need to refrigerate the cherry dump cake. Of the 3 ingredients, none of them are perishable and can be stored at room temperature. This cake is best served hot so if you are going to store it for later then you will want to warm it back up in the oven for 5-10 minutes before serving.
You can make the cake in advance and freeze it for another time. When you are ready to serve it, let the cake thaw for 30 minutes and then make sure to warm it up again.
You do not stir the dump cake. The ingredients are just dumped and baked. I have seen some dump recipes that ask for stirring, but not this one!
This recipe can also be made in a crock pot or slow cooker. You will still dump the ingredients into the slow cooker the same way that you would the baking pan. Set the slow cooker to low for 4 hours.
You can use a 9x13 pan like we did for this recipe. You can also use this reciepe to make the dump cake in two 8x8 pans. That way you can eat one now and have a cherry cake for later
Normally, you test whether a cake is done by inserting a toothpick in the middle and checking to see if anything sticks to it. That method would produce some interesting results here since the consistency of this cake should be more like a cobbler or pie than a cake. Really, you just want to watch the top and make sure that it is a golden brown. By that point, the top will be fully baked and the rest of the cake will be hot and ready to eat!
Oh yes you can! My favorite is cherry but do not be afraid to branch out and try others as well. Some popular substitutions are apple, peach, mixed berry, strawberry.
- top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream
- chocolate syrup - I know it seems like overkill but chocolate and cherries just go so well together.
- sprinkle some chopped pecans
- coffee or espresso on the side - this dessert is very sweet and needs something to balance it out.
