Why This Recipe Works
- Use fresh or frozen peaches. When we made the recipe for this post it was the beginning of summer and fresh juicy peaches were plentiful. That being said, we also like to make this recipe during the winter when fresh peaches are not as tasty so we use frozen peaches. You can also make this peach crisp with canned peaches. Either way, the peach pie filling from scratch tastes amazing!
- Easy to make. The nice thing about Southern peach crumble recipes like this is that they are super easy to make and do not require a lot of messing around in the kitchen. This is one of the reasons we make them so often.
- Quick baking time. This isn't one of our recipes that is done in under 10 minutes like our Summertime Red Cabbage Salad or our Quick and Easy Coleslaw but as far as a baked fruit dessert goes, it doesn't get too much quicker than this. Done in under 1 hour.
- Compliments every kind of meal. We have been serving this peach cobbler for years and I think we have had it as a dessert for every kind of meal. Chicken, check! Beef, check! Dairy, check! Vegetarian, check! Shabbat, check! You get the idea.
Easy Recipe Using Household Ingredients
Other than going out to get fresh peaches (which you should always do if you can) the rest of the ingredients are things you already have in your kitchen. To make the best Easy Peach Crumble, all you need is:
A Step by step guide to making this recipe:
Step 1. Slice the Peaches.
Slice each peach into approximately 16 slices and toss them into a baking dish. Use enough peaches to make a nice, full layer on the bottom of the pan. This is dessert, after all!
Step 2. Coat with flour and brown sugar.
Use ¼ cup flour and all the brown sugar.
Step 3. Toss the peaches and sugar.
Gently toss peaches until fully coated. The sugar and flour will dissolve from the peach juice, this is the good stuff!
Step 4. Mix together the other dry ingredients and add egg.
In a medium bowl stir together remaining flour, white sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Then lightly scramble the egg and add to dry ingredients. Mix with a fork until mixture is crumbly. I find finishing with my fingers creates the best texture.
Step 5. Sprinkle the crumble and drizzle oil.
Sprinkle the crumbs all over the top of the peaches. Do not stir but be sure to use all the crumbs.
Drizzle the oil over the top. Its ok if not all the powder gets wet but if you want a bit more oil you can add it.
Step 6. Bake to perfection.
Bake at 375ºF for 40-45 minutes. I like to turn off the oven and let it sit a while as the oven cools to get nice and toasty brown. Remove from the oven. Can be enjoyed hot or cold.
Recipe FAQ
They are similar. A peach cobbler usually refers to a dessert made in a deep dish with a layer of peaches on the bottom and a thick biscuit layer on top. A peach crumble like this one is going to be made in a similar dish but not be as thick. Also, instead of a thick layer of biscuit on top, the crumble will have the dough surrounding the fruit as it bakes.
Not at all. A lot of the nutrition in a peach is found in the skin so it is always better to leave it on. Also, the peach skin provides a different texture and feel than the rest of the peach and that really adds to the experience of eating this peach crumble recipe.
