When it comes to Passover, we like to celebrate the holiday by eating lots of The Best Passover Dessert Recipes and The Best Passover Side Dish Recipes. Kugels like this Apple Kugel are traditional Jewish comfort food and can be eaten as either a side or a dessert. Just like our Gluten Free Shortbread Cookies and our Chocolate Mousse Cake, this recipe is gluten free too!
Ingredients
One of the great things about this recipe is just how easy it is to make. Simple ingredients and a quick preparation time mean that this recipe is sure to be a favorite. Here is what you need:
- Apples - as with any apple pie recipe, a variety of apples makes the recipe better. We always use at least two granny smith apples and then one or two other varieties. Check out our Rosh Hashanah Apple Cake recipe for a description of the flavor profiles of different apples.
- Cinnamon - for flavor.
- Brown Sugar - to sweeten the apples. Unlike our recipe for the Best Cranberry Apple Crumble, we do not separate the sugar out in this recipe. It all goes into the apples and none in the topping.
- Almond Flour - the gluten free base for the crumble. Gluten free flour still has chometz in it so that is out for Passover.
- Granulated Sugar - to sweeten the crisp topping.
- Egg - to act as a binder for the crisp topping.
- Salt
- Passover Baking Powder - make sure that you use the Passover variety during Passover as the standard baking powder contains corn starch.
See recipe card for quantities.
How to make Easy Sweet Apple Cinnamon Kugel without Noodles step by step
Step 1 - Prepare the apples
Slice the apples and remove the cores. As we pointed out in the ingredients section above, a variety of apples is best for this recipe. No need to peel the apples for this recipe, just leave the skins on.
Mix the teaspoon ground cinnamon and brown sugar with the apples right in the baking dish. Make sure to evenly coat the apples.
Step 2 - Make the Sweet Cinnamon Apple Kugel Topping
Some recipes are made with gluten free rolled oats but there are problems with those when it comes to Passover so we used almond flour instead. Mix the almond flour, white sugar, salt, and Passover baking powder together. Then beat one egg and add it to the dry ingredients. Mixing it with a fork helps to make the topping more crumbly and keeps it from clumping together.
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples and get ready to bake.
Step 3 - Bake
Bake the Gluten Free Apple Crisp at 375ºF for 30 minutes cook time. The top should be golden brown. If it isn't, return to the oven for another 5 minutes of cooking time and check again.
Let cool for 15- 20 minutes before serving.
Pro Recipe Tips for making The Best Passover Apple Cinnamon Kugel
- There will be some liquid on the bottom. Use that as a sauce to spoon over the top of each portion when serving.
- If you are going to slice the apples and come back to finish the recipe later, squirt a little lemon juice onto the apples to keep them from browning.
Substitutions for Easy Sweet Apple Cinnamon Kugel recipe
This recipe calls for apples but the essence of the recipe is that it highlights the natural flavor of the fruit. Instead of apples you can substitute an equal amount of:
- Pears.
- Peaches.
- Plums.
Variations on Easy Apple Cinnamon Kugel without Noodles
- Serve with ice cream - If you are having a dairy meal or eating this as a snack food, serve warm with ice cream.
- Deluxe - drizzle caramel sauce over the top.
- Apple and Pear Crisp. Use half apples and half pears. You should still use at least one granny smith apple.
- Serve it for breakfast alongside our Best Matzo Meal Pancakes and Baked Pears with Cinnamon.
Equipment Needed for this Recipe
This is a recipe that only needs two dishes:
- A large bowl - to mix the apple crisp topping.
- A deep baking dish - for baking.
How to Store
Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 4 days. The ingredients will keep longer than that but the apples will start to leak after 3-4 days and the Apple Crisp will get mushy.
If you want to make this is advance, all of the ingredients in the Gluten Free Apple Crisp freeze very well. I would suggest making it in a disposable aluminum pan and then covering with plastic wrap and aluminum foil before freezing. Bake for 30 minutes at 250ºF when you are ready to eat.
