Why This Recipe Works
Some fresh spring onion dip recipes use one cup sour cream or cheese. We like to serve this one with meat and dairy meals so we kept our recipe pareve and dairy free. You don't have to look around for where to buy green onion dip when you can make it from scratch at home. Some of the great things about this dip are that it is:
- Easy to make. Also called scallion dip, this recipe only has 3 ingredients and no cooking or heating needed. How much easier does it get?
- Quick to prepare. Toss the ingredients into a blender and it is done. Ready in under 5 minutes!
- Light and satisfying. Without the cheese and sour cream to weigh it down, this dip is super light and refreshing.
- A delicious surprise appetizer for the table. A lot of times we eat challah and then move on to a soup or salad course, or to the main dishes. While there is nothing wrong with delicious challah by itself, an unexpected challah dip can be a nice addition to make good challah better.
A Step by step guide to making this homemade onion dip recipe
- Step 1
Chop off the white part of the sliced green onions. If you leave them on, the dip will be too spicy and that is not what we are going for with this dip.
- Step 2
Chop the green onion into 5-6 pieces each. This is done to break them down before putting them into the blender. If you leave them whole then the blender will not fully process the onions and you will get stringy bits in your dip.
- Step 3
Add the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and onions to the blender. Those are the only ingredients. No garlic powder and no salt.
- Step 4
Blend on medium for 30 seconds. Using a spatula, scrape the sides of the blender back down. Blend again for 30 seconds on medium or until smooth. Use a blender for this and not a food processor. If the dip is too thick for your liking you can add a little bit of warm water to thin it out. Blend for another 10 seconds if you do this.
- Step 5
Cover and refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
